Letter

Dear Ms. Wright:

In its meeting of 18 November, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed and approved the concept design for new building identification signs to be used at federal facilities managed by the General Services Administration in the National Capital Region. The Commission endorsed the program to install the new signs in the Federal Triangle in downtown Washington, D.C., as a pilot project for this sign program.

While approving the submission, the Commission members expressed concern regarding the proliferation of signs and visual clutter in the city and suggested that this program provides the opportunity to remove old, redundant, or unnecessary signs related to government facilities. They requested that the project team continue its consultations with the staff to determine the optimum location for each sign, to avoid visual distractions, and to improve information for pedestrians.

The Commission looks forward to the next submission, which should include a detailed site plan for each sign. As always, the staff is available to assist you.

Sincerely,
