Letter
Dear Mr. Carlstrom:
During its meeting of 21 September 2004, the Commission reviewed and approved the concept development for the Georgetown Waterfront Park, between Wisconsin Avenue and 34th Street. The success of the park’s design will rest in its simplicity. As such, further simplification of the paving materials and landscaping features will be necessary to keep these features united in the park.
Since the river overlooks by Ms. Pinto will provide a nautical metaphor in the park’s design, introducing industrial or historic metaphors in the changing paving materials and landscape selections is both distracting and unnecessary. By providing sample panels on site of the various paving schemes for inspection, we will be able to assist in the selection of the final paving material to be used for the pedestrian pathways. Uniformity of the plants and trees in the landscape panels will also help reduce costs and the need for excessive future maintenance. In addition, we recommend that the twin-twenty lampposts be eliminated, and that the K Street median and the design of the labyrinth receive further study.
We, as well as the Georgetown Community, will be excited to see this park become a reality in the near future. As always, the staff is available to assist you prior to the next review.
Sincerely,
/s/Frederick J. Lindstrom
