Letter
Dear Dr. Jordan:
In its meeting of 19 April, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed and approved the concept design for alterations in the vicinity of the administration building at the U.S. National Arboretum, a project which includes renovation and enhancement of exterior spaces adjacent to the building, refurbishment of the koi pool, and reconfiguration of a portion of Meadow Road.
The Commission members expressed appreciation for the proposal to improve the building's terraces for special events and plant displays, and to reconfigure the adjacent road into a pedestrian walk for visitors that would connect the administration building to the nearby herb garden, bonsai and penjing museum, and meadow walk. They suggested that shade be provided where possible for seating areas and in particular for benches along the northern edge of the north terrace. They also encouraged the use of porous pavement for all areas of new hardscape at the Arboretum.
The Commission looks forward to the review of the final design. As always, the staff is available to assist you with the next submission.
Sincerely,
/s/Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
