Letter
Dear Mr. Thomas:
In its meeting of 21 June, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed and approved a concept for a public art installation by artist Cheryl Foster at the Deanwood Community Center and Library.
The Commission members commended the artist for incorporating the community's input and for her selection of stories and images depicted in the mosaics proposed for the two sculptures. They observed that the form of the sculptures would invite viewing from all directions, and they therefore recommended further study of the site design—preferably relocating the sculptures to a prominent placement commensurate with their formal power, such as along the paved entrance walk as paired gateway elements, rather than the proposed siting in a remnant patch of lawn. If the proposed location is retained, they suggested improving the landscape to facilitate viewing of the sculptures, which should be spaced more widely and set within accessible pavement. The Commission members supported the proposal to delete the video component of the design.
The Commission looks forward to the review of a final submission and, as always, the staff is available to assist you with the next submission.
Sincerely,
/s/Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
