Dear Mr. Russo:
During its last meeting of 15 September, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed and approved the revised concept for Lincoln Hall, a new building for the National Defense University at Fort McNair. While the addition of the two mechanical penthouses is acceptable, the Commission asked that the cornice detail on these roof structures be made more substantial. The Commission members had previously encouraged a roof enclosure for the entrance drum and they support the use of the proposed light-weight kingpost structural system, which provides maximum transparency to create a unique experience within the entry drum.
The Commission looks forward to further review of this and other projects for Fort McNair. As always, the staff is available should you require guidance.
