Letter
Dear Mr. Monfort:
In its meeting of 21 January, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed and approved the concept design for the installation of a secondary containment fence at the Smithsonian National Zoological Park.
In their discussion, the Commission members acknowledged that the variety of fence styles—ornamental, welded wire, and chain link—results from considerations of visibility and cost. For the proposed reconfiguration of the lower gateway to the Zoo associated with the new containment fence project, the Commission encouraged further exploration of design options for the entrance and plaza, which may possibly have a character distinct from the main entrance located at Connecticut Avenue.
The Commission looks forward to the review of the final design for the new containment fence and the concept development of the lower entrance and plaza at your earliest convenience. As always, the staff is available to assist you.
Sincerely,
Thomas E. Luebke, AIA
