Letter
Dear Mr. Lebryk:
In the meeting of 15 June, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed designs for the $5 gold coin and the $1 silver coin commemorating the Old San Francisco Mint Building. The recommendations were as follows:
$5 Gold Coin
Obverse: The Commission preferred the Liberty portrait on Design #GO-02 and the layout of inscriptions, dates, and decorative elements on Design #GO-01.
Reverse: The Commission's choice was Design #GR-02-B, with the "CIRCA 1869" text removed.
$1 Silver Coin
Obverse: The Commission had no comment on SO-01, the only design shown.
Reverse: The Commission did not like either SR-01-A or SR-01-B, because the drawing of the Mint used for both was so poor. The suggestion was to use one of the designs proposed for the gold reverse or, if it was felt necessary to use a design based on Shirl J. Winter's medal, at least make a better drawing of it.
Sincerely,
/s/Thomas Luebke, AIA
