Dear Ms. O'Dell:
In its meeting of 17 September, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed the final submission for perimeter security at the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial. The Commission approved the proposal as revised, which addressed their comments to modify the edges of the planter at the entry to the site and to specify a higher-canopy tree in the planter that would create less of a visual barrier into the memorial. The Commission members supported the selection of elm trees to match the adjacent street trees; they requested that the largest size of tree—with a minimum caliper of eight inches—be installed to create a mature landscape as quickly as possible.
The Commission members look forward to the review of the outstanding items associated with the design of the memorial, including the modeling of the surface of the statue of Dr. King and the selection and graphic layout of the quotations. As always, the staff is available to assist you.
