Letter
Dear Ms. Nauden:
In its meeting of 16 July, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed the concept proposal for the Adams Morgan Public Art Project for improvements to the new plaza at the corner of 18th Street and Columbia Road, NW, including the installation of sculptures by artist James Simon. The Commission members recommended that the placement of the sculptures and other new amenities in this plaza be carefully studied so that sufficient open space is maintained to accommodate pedestrian and community needs. In addition, they recommended that the ground plane of the plaza be kept as simple as possible and commented that the proposed curved pathways of colored paving would be a distraction from the artwork itself and the surrounding commercial architecture.
The Commission recommended that a revised scheme be developed in consultation with the community and neighboring businesses and re-submitted for review when ready. As always, the staff is available to assist with your next submission.
Sincerely,
/s/Thomas E. Luebke, AIA
