Letter
Dear Mr. Lebryk:
In the meeting of 18 May, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed designs for the first four of the $10 gold coins honoring the First Spouses, as well as the bronze duplicate medals. The recommendations were as follows:
OBVERSE DESIGNS
Martha Washington: Design #5 was preferred, with the comment that her image could be made more elegant in appearance. Because of the type of cap she is wearing, this is the only design that places Mrs. Washington in her historic period.
Abigail Adams: Design #4 was preferred, using the template from #2. The Commission recommended that this template be used for all obverse designs.
Jefferson's "Liberty": Design #3 was preferred, with the comment that it captures best the spirit of Jefferson.
Dolley Madison: Design #4 was preferred.
REVERSE DESIGNS
Martha Washington: Design #2, aiding soldiers at Valley Forge, was preferred.
Abigail Adams: Design #2 was preferred.
Jefferson: Design #5 was preferred, with the comment that it was a simple design and a tribute to Jefferson's achievement as an architect.
Dolley Madison: Design #3 was preferred.
The medal designs recommended were the same as for the coins.
Sincerely,
/s/Thomas Luebke, AIA
