Dear Mr. Brandes:
In the meeting of 19 October, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed and approved the concept design for the proposed Washington Canal Park at 2nd Street, SE, between I and M Streets.
The Commission members expressed enthusiasm for the proposal while commenting that its complexity would make ongoing future maintenance a critical part of the park's success, particularly regarding constant public use of the large lawns. They suggested that more robust and simpler details would make the project less gardenlike and more park-like; and they requested that the next submission include proposed materials and design details, such as any guardrail that may be needed along the tilted lawn area.
The Commission members look forward to reviewing the final design of this park and other projects of the Anacostia Waterfront Corporation. As always, the staff is available to assist you.
