Letter
Dear Mr. Maj:
In its meeting of 19 April, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed the revised design of the proposed boundary niche wall for Arlington National Cemetery’s Land Development 90 Project. The Commission expressed its appreciation for the design team’s efficient response to its previous recommendations. After viewing additional photographs of the existing boundary wall at the cemetery, the Commission requested that piers or buttresses be introduced on the exterior side of the wall to modulate the continuous face adjacent to Routes 27 and 110. The Commission supported the selection of a gray-colored natural stone for the faces of the wall and reiterated its request that the wall coping be a natural stone in a harmonious color.
In anticipation of the resolution of these outstanding details, the Commission gave its conditional approval to the design provided that these modifications are made. Final approval is delegated to the staff. Since material samples were not available for the Commission review, a mockup with the proposed materials should be erected on site for the staff to review and approve before the final selection of materials.
The Commission looks forward to continuing its review of other projects for the Cemetery as they are developed. As always, the staff is available to assist you and the design team with the final submission.
Sincerely,
/s/Thomas E. Luebke, AIA
