Letter
Dear Mr. Mugno:
In its meeting of 19 April, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed and approved the design of the U.S. Air Force Combat Action Medal and the associated ribbon and lapel pin. The Commission members commented that the finish on the prototype appeared dull and suggested a finish with a brighter color or perhaps more contrast, such as by using a polished finish or a different type of metal to emphasize the figure of the star.
Thank you for providing the Commission the opportunity to examine the two medals recently developed by the Institute of Heraldry. The members appreciated your consideration of their past comments in developing the design for the Air Force Combat Action Medal and reiterated the desire that the Institute’s schedule for future designs include sufficient time for responding to the Commission’s recommendations.
As always, the staff is available to assist you with future submissions.
Sincerely,
/s/Thomas E. Luebke, AIA
