Letter
Dear Mr. Gittens:
In its meeting of 21 June, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed and approved with comments the concept proposal for the installation of a sculpture entitled "Encore" by artist Zachary Oxman in the new Edward "Duke" Ellington Plaza located at T and 7th Streets, NW.
The Commission members supported the use of stainless steel as an appropriate medium for this sculpture. However, they commented that the single piano leg under the leading edge of the swirling keyboard was unnecessary and should be removed. They also suggested that the base of the sculpture be studied further, possibly to consider the use of stainless steel rather than granite and to refine the shape to represent a grand piano more closely. They commented that the accuracy of the likeness of Duke Ellington will be critical to the success of the piece.
In addition, the members commented that the success of this installation will be dependent on the design of the plaza as an appropriate site for the sculpture; they encouraged the artist to work with the landscape designer to create an attractive public space and setting for the sculpture.
The Commission members delegated final approval to the staff.
Sincerely,
/s/
