Letter

Dear Mr. Lawler:

In its meeting of 15 May, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed the revised concept for the visitor support facility in conjunction with the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial at Independence Avenue, SW along the Tidal Basin. The Commission members approved the proposed location and configuration of the facility, expressing support for these overall decisions. Although further information on the architectural character was not presented, the Commission continues to support the general vocabulary shown in the prior submission and the effort to reduce the facility's visual impact, including the intention to provide a thin appearance to the overhangs and to emphasize the openness of the pedestrian areas adjacent to the visitor support facility.

The Commission looks forward to reviewing further design development of this feature as well as the remainder of the memorial project. As always, the staff is available to assist you with the next submission.

Sincerely,

Thomas E. Luebke, AIA
