Letter
Dear Mr. Kayne:
In its meeting of 16 April, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed a concept design for a new fire station for Engine Company 22, to be located at 6825 Georgia Avenue, NW. The Commission did not take an action, making the following comments and recommendations for the development of the design.
The Commission members expressed appreciation for the architectural ambition of the design, but raised concerns regarding the formal qualities and complexity of this small building. They questioned the proposal for the rotation of the second-floor volume, noting that the success of the design will depend on its detailing and on the ability to obtain a sufficient range of colors for the exterior metal panels to achieve the desired appearance. Noting that budget limitations could affect these issues, they recommended further study to determine the feasibility of the intended design before continuing the development of the current concept.
The Commission looks forward to the review of a new submission responding to these comments and encourages the project team to consult with the Commission staff, which is available to assist you with the next submission.
Sincerely,
/s/Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
