Dear Mr. Jeppson:

In its meeting of 18 June, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed alternative designs for a Congressional Gold Medal recognizing the participants in the 1965 voting rights march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama.  The Commission’s recommendations were as follows.

For the obverse, the Commission members recommended alternative #6-A, consistent with the preference of the Mint’s liaison and the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC), and they supported a modification as presented to adjust or remove the circular border to provide more space around the central image.  For the reverse, the Commission members recommended alternative #5, consistent with the preference of the liaison and the CCAC; they recommended adding an attribution to President Lyndon B. Johnson for the quotation.  They did not support a possible modification of relocating the quotation to form a circular border, and instead advised maintaining its position as the focus of the reverse design.

As always, the staff is available to assist you with future submissions.

Sincerely,
