Letter
Dear Mr. Vogel:
In its meeting of 18 June, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed a concept submission for a new pool house and swimming pool in East Potomac Park at 972 Ohio Drive, SW. The Commission approved the concept with the following comments.
The Commission members supported the proposal to create a single, axial approach to the renovated aquatic complex flanked by historic pavilions, and they encouraged the development of the design to create comfort within this symmetrical formality. They recommended that the central vaulted portal be emphasized as the focus of the project by raising it further above the adjacent building masses; they also suggested that the two small structures located along the center axis could be more expressive and less rigid in their geometry. For the approach walk, they recommended that the proposed trees be positioned to provide a maximum of shade for the comfort of visitors. Commenting that the final design for the complex includes many elements requiring careful detailing—such as screens, railings, doors, and overhangs—they advised focusing on overall quality for the project as a whole, rather than concentrating resources specifically on an elaborate barrier fence near the pool. Finally, they observed that the design may not provide sufficient solar protection for the spectator seating facing the pool to the southwest, and they suggested further study of sun angles and overhangs to increase shade.
The Commission looks forward to further review of this proposal. As always, the staff is available to assist you in its development.
Sincerely,
/s/ Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
