Dear Mr. Motl:
In its meeting of 15 June, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed alternative reverse designs for the 2019 and 2020 issues of the Native American One Dollar Coin series, providing the following recommendations.
For the 2019 coin featuring the theme of American Indians involved in the U.S. space program, the Commission recommended reverse #10, consistent with the preference of several of the Mint’s liaison groups, and gave recommendations to simplify and improve the design. They requested minimizing or deleting the arrow in the lower right, commenting that the connection of Mary Golda Ross to the nearby mathematical notation will be readily apparent without this graphic device. They also supported the Mint’s intention to simplify the line of clouds in the lower background; to remove some of the stars in order to convey a more straightforward depiction of the Pleiades constellation; and to delete the launch tower and possibly the rocket. They commented that the simplified composition would allow for shifting the portrait of Ross toward the upper left, providing room at the bottom to add the phrase “American Indians in the Space Program,” as seen in some of the other alternatives.
For the 2020 coin featuring the theme of Elizabeth Peratrovich and Alaska’s Anti-Discrimination Act of 1945, the Commission supported reverse #6, consistent with the preference of several of the Mint’s liaison groups.
