Letter
Dear Mr. Ryder:
In its meeting of 17 October, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed a set of alternative designs for the 2021 American Liberty High Relief 24-Karat Gold $100 coin and the associated silver medal. The Commission provided the following recommendations and comments.
The Commission members recommended alternative #15 for the obverse, commenting that its triple portrait effectively relates the theme of liberty to all Americans in a contemporary way. They acknowledged the preferences of the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee for alternative #2, symbolically depicting a mustang throwing off its saddle, but they concluded that the saddle would be illegible at a small scale and could be mistaken for a rider. For the reverse, the Commission members recommended alternative #7, an adaptation of the image of an eagle depicted on the 2017 coin in this series.
As always, the staff is available to assist you.
Sincerely,
/s/Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
