Letter

Dear Mr. Anderson:

In its public meeting of 18 March conducted by videoconference, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed and approved a second concept design submission for the replacement of the Joy Evans Therapeutic Recreation Center, located at 3030 G Street, SE.

The Commission members expressed appreciation for the applicant’s responsiveness to their previous advice, commending the significant improvement in the landscape and architectural design. In their support for the project, they recommended that the design of the two entrances be refined to be more welcoming and more harmonious with the forest- like evocativeness of the rest of the facade, while retaining a special, ornamental character to distinguish them as entrances; they suggested that the wooden columns at these locations could be cylindrical, similar to those proposed at the playground shelter, or perhaps a more sculptural or natural form. They recommended the selection of the darker “Copper” color for the wood veneer pier cladding within the enclosure system.

The Commission looks forward to further review of the project. As always, the staff is available to assist you.

Sincerely,

/s/Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
