Letter
Dear Mr. Weaver:
In its public meeting of 15 April conducted by videoconference, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed a concept design submission for a new residential building at 3220 Prospect Street, NW (case number OG 19-186). The Commission approved the concept submission, supporting the preference of the Old Georgetown Board for Option A, with projecting brick bays, and provided the following comments.
The Commission members observed that this project is situated within a complex and sensitive historic context of small-scale houses and larger commercial buildings; they expressed appreciation for the proposed series of bays along the Prospect Street facade, which would help to reduce the perceived scale of the building. They agreed with the Old Georgetown Board’s recommendations to minimize the visual impact of the fifth floor by increasing the depth of its step-back along Prospect Street and simplifying its facade; to recompose the oriel window in relation to the narrower garage opening below; and to refine the brickwork detailing, particularly at the window surrounds, stringcourses, and corbels. They also recommended that the main entrance be designed with more architectural prominence, commensurate with the size of the building and distinguished from the series of bays.
The Commission and the Old Georgetown Board look forward to further review of this project. Please coordinate the next submission with the staff, which is available to assist you.
Sincerely,
/s/Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
