Letter
Dear Mr. Hollis:
In its public meeting of 22 January conducted by videoconference, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed alternative reverse designs for the 2027 and 2028 issues of the Native American One Dollar Coin series, providing the following recommendations and comments.
Consistent with the preferences of the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee and the Mint’s liaisons, the Commission members recommended alternative #1 for 2027, portraying the subject of the coin, Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte of the Omaha Tribe, caring for an elderly woman who is covered by a native-patterned blanket. For the 2028 coin, they recommended alternative #2, which they praised for its accurate depiction of the four-plank “olo” boards used by Native Hawaiian surfers.
As always, the staff is available to assist you with future submissions.
Sincerely,
/s/Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
