Letter
Dear Mr. Hollis:
In its public meeting of 22 January conducted by videoconference, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed design alternatives for the obverse of the 2027–2030 Paralympic Sports Half Dollar, which is required by law to depict President John F. Kennedy on the obverse. The Commission provided the following recommendations and comments.
The Commission members found Kennedy’s portrait on the current coin, in use since 1964 and based on his presidential medal, to be superior to the proposed designs. Among the presented alternatives, they recommended obverse #4, commenting favorably on the president’s hopeful expression, the scale of the profile portrait, and the composition’s overall similarity to the 1964 design. For the development of the design, they advised using a serif font for the inscriptions and suggested depicting the president at a slightly older age.
The Commission looks forward to reviewing design alternatives for the reverses of this coin series. As always, the staff is available to assist you with future submissions.
Sincerely,
