Dear Mr. Hollis:
In its meeting of 17 September, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed design alternatives for coins and medals featuring Aquaman, Batgirl, and the Flash, for issue in 2027 as part of the Comic Art Coin and Medal Program celebrating the art of American comic books. The Commission was pleased to take into consideration the preferences of the comics industry liaison group for this coin series, Warner Bros. Discovery, and provided the following comments and recommendations.
Aquaman. The Commission members recommended obverse #3, consistent with the preferences of Warner Bros. Discovery. In their support for reverse #1, which is also the preferred alternative of the liaison, they suggested that the faces of Aquaman featured on both sides of the coin clearly depict the same individual.
Batgirl. Consistent with the preferences of the liaison, the Commission members recommended obverse #1, citing the artistic merit of the design. They recommended approval of reverse #2, which is also preferred reverse alternative of the liaison.
The Flash. The Commission members found the Flash’s pose in obverse #3—the liaison’s preferred alternative—to be too similar to the preferred reverse #1. They therefore recommended selection of obverse #1, the secondary preference of the liaison, to be paired with reverse #1. As always, the staff is available to assist you with future submissions.
