Letter
Dear Mr. Jakus:
In its meeting of 17 September, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed a revised concept design submission for renovations and additions to an existing office building located at 1445 New York Avenue, NW (case number SL 26-157). The Commission approved the revised concept and provided the following comments for the development of the design.
The Commission members complimented the design team for the responsiveness to their previous comments and for the range of options presented showing combinations of different metal finishes and glass colors. They endorsed the patinated green copper finish for the aluminum curtainwall system with the neutral color glass. For the options presented regarding the articulation of the facades, they recommended that the vertical spandrel panels along the New York Avenue facade be metal panels, with glass used along the entire west-facing facade at the roof terrace in the same configuration of mullion spacing. In addition, they requested reducing the height of the horizontal spandrel glass on the 9th floor to be similar to the floor directly below and achieve a balanced and elegant facade composition.
The Commission directed that the final submission be reviewed by the staff for approval on the Shipstead-Luce Act appendix. Please coordinate the next submission with the staff which, as always, is available to assist you.
Sincerely,
/s/Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
