Letter
Dear Mr. Jacobs:
During its last meeting of 20 October, the Commission reviewed the revised landscape concept for three new mixed-use buildings, including the National Children's Museum, at L'Enfant Plaza on the 10th Street Promenade (SL 06-003). While the Commission is generally supportive of the landscape approach, the members would like to make a site visit to review the proposed materials prior to granting approval.
Upon further discussion following the presentation on the landscape design, the Commission members observed that the new presentation materials highlighted an issue that had not been apparent in previous presentations: that the proposed massing of the two buildings on the east side of the property places these buildings uncomfortably close to the Department of Housing and Urban Development building designed by Marcel Breuer. The Commission passed a motion recommending that this concern be addressed as the design team continues to refine the envelopes of the two eastern buildings.
The Commission looks forward to seeing further development of the design for this project prior to final review and intends to schedule a site visit in advance of the next submission. As always, the staff is available should you require further guidance.
Sincerely,
/s/Thomas Luebke, AIA
