Letter
Dear Mr. McHugh:
In its meeting of 21 January, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed options for a revised concept design for additions and alterations to the United Unions Building at 1750 New York Avenue, NW (case number SL 10-042). The Commission approved the concept design, expressing support for both alternatives A.2 and B.2 while encouraging further development of the site and landscape design. The Commission also expressed appreciation for the requested analysis of the context, commenting that this information was helpful in the refinement and review of the design.
In their discussion, the Commission members commented favorably on the revised design, particularly how the new entrance designs will draw people into the building. While supporting the overall approach of a reworked landscape and fountain, they made several specific recommendations: to strengthen the connection between the terrace and the adjacent Rawlins Park; to simplify the design of the terrace, possibly by eliminating the existing seating alcoves; and to increase the visibility of the proposed fountain.
The Commission looks forward to reviewing the final design submission. As always, the staff is available to assist you.
Sincerely,
Thomas E. Luebke, AIA
Secretary
