Dear Ms. Penney:

During its meeting of 15 July, the Commission reviewed the concept for the near-term improvements along the South Capitol Corridor and the Poplar Point area of Anacostia. While the Commission is greatly encouraged by the activity and thoughtfulness being directed to this long-neglected area, the projects are relying on a traditional design vocabulary which may be inappropriate given the context. These projects can provide an opportunity to do something contemporary and uniquely specific to the neighborhoods while improving pedestrian access and adding amenities.

The Commission looks forward to reviewing future projects for the District Department of Transportation, including the new light rail stations and contemporary styled new street furniture. Please continue to work with staff to determine which projects will require a formal presentation or may receive a staff review.

Sincerely,

/s/Frederick J. Lindstrom
