United Nations Memorial Cemetery
Busan, South Korea
Letter
Dear Mr. Cleland:
In its meeting of 15 March, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed the concept design for the United States monument at the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Busan, South Korea. The Commission commended the simple power of the design and approved the concept with the following recommendations.
The Commission members cited the appropriateness of the design for its setting and the quiet, peaceful quality that would be conveyed by the proposed dark granite. However, they observed that some details of the design may suggest the character of a sign. They therefore recommended eliminating the recessed treatment of the base, instead bringing the stone directly to the ground to emphasize its solemnity and weight; they agreed that additional details, such as the configuration of the border, could be further refined as the design is developed in consultation with the Commission staff.
The Commission looks forward to review of the final design for this monument. As always, the staff is available to assist you with the next submission.
Sincerely,
/s/Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
