Letter
Dear Mr. Gittens:
In its meeting of 15 May, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed and approved the public artwork to be located at the Kennedy Recreation Center and Playground—a pier with mosaics featuring people associated with the surrounding Shaw neighborhood—by artist Byron Peck.
The Commission members suggested that the artist incorporate a finished appearance along the four corners; they also recommended strongly that the pier be relocated to a hard surface in the public realm, outside of the fence, which would also provide pedestrians with the valuable opportunity to touch the mosaics.
As there was not a quorum during the review of this project, the Commission's recommendation will be placed on the agenda for ratification at its meeting of 19 June. The Commission looks forward to reviewing future projects for your agency. As always, the Commission staff is available to assist you.
Sincerely,
Thomas E. Luebke, AIA
