Letter
Dear Mr. Lew:
In its meeting of 15 May, the Commission of Fine Arts approved the concept design for the replacement of the H.D. Woodson Senior High School at 5500 Eads Street, NE. The Commission members expressed enthusiasm for the high quality of the design and the thoughtful disposition of the program within the building and on the site. The Commission commented that the design of the entrance area will be critical in clarifying the relationship between the classroom wing on the south and the grouping of special-use spaces on the north. The Commission encouraged further study of this area, acknowledging the decision to eliminate the large canopy shown in earlier design sketches but questioning whether the proposed trees in the courtyard would provide sufficient emphasis for the main entrance.
The Commission looks forward to your next submission for a revised concept review as the design is further developed. As always, the staff is available to assist you with future submissions.
Sincerely,
Thomas E. Luebke, AIA
