Dear Mr. Ryder:

In its meeting of 16 January, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed alternative designs for a gold coin and silver and bronze medals commemorating the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II. The Commission provided the following comments and recommendations.

For the obverse, the Commission members supported the theme of an eagle as a symbol of the nation’s strength in bringing the war to a close. They recommended alternative #1 as the best of the eagle designs, commenting on its dramatic composition and the legibility of the olive branch held in the eagle’s talons. For the reverse, they recommended alternative #11, commenting that its composition and the sans-serif typography of the “V” symbol are appropriately reminiscent of a 1940s design aesthetic.

As always, the staff is available to assist you with future submissions.

Sincerely,

/s/Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
