Letter
Dear Mr. Hunter:
In its public meeting of 16 January conducted by videoconference, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed a concept submission for the renovation of and additions to the existing building at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School at 3200 6th Street, SE. Delegating the review of the final design to the staff, the Commission approved the submission and provided the following comments.
The Commission members expressed strong support for the proposed concept design, which they characterized as well thought out and having a strong identity and formal clarity. They suggested further study of the fenestration pattern to ensure the proposed opaque panels are not located randomly on the facade but are more regularly spaced. They commended the overall landscape design for adding significant planting areas on a very tight site; they suggested further study of access for pre-K classrooms to outside play spaces. In addition, they encouraged sustainability strategies, such as recycling salvaged materials, to the extent possible. Finally, they also encouraged continuing the program of commemoration of Martin Luther King, Jr., such as commissioning a new artwork portraying him for the facade.
The Commission looks forward to further review of this important project. Please continue consulting on the development of the design with the staff which, as always, is available to assist you.
Sincerely,
/s/Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
