Dear Ms. Gibson:
In its public meeting of 16 November conducted by videoconference, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed alternative designs for a medallion to serve as part of the handover ceremony at the conclusion of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, in anticipation of the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. The Commission provided the following recommendations and comments.
Among the presented alternatives, which were not categorized as obverse or reverse designs, the Commission members recommended alternatives #6 and #14 with some modifications. For alternative #6, in order to improve the balance of the compelling composition, they suggested a lighter version of the “LA 28” logo, comparable to the Paris text, and a consistent horizontal alignment for each city’s two lines of text; they also suggested using the logo of the 2024 Paris games if feasible. For alternative #14, they suggested giving a greater prominence to the small image of the Los Angeles Coliseum, site of the 1932 and 1984 Olympic Games; this could be achieved by adjusting the Arc de Triomphe image to enlarge its framing for the Coliseum, and by removing the Los Angeles text and Olympic rings that are duplicative of alternative #6. They noted that an enlarged image of the Coliseum will better illustrate the Olympic rings on its facade, and they suggested clearly depicting the flame at the top of the Coliseum’s spire.
If the forthcoming logo for the Los Angeles games results in a significant change to the design, please consult further with the Commission. As always, the staff is available to assist you with future submissions.
