Letter
Dear Mr. Ryder:
In its meeting of 17 October, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed a set of alternative designs for the reverse of a circulating quarter-dollar coin, based on the theme of George Washington crossing the Delaware River in 1776, to be issued at the conclusion of the current series of America the Beautiful coins. The Commission provided the following recommendation and comments.
Consistent with the preferences of the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee and the Mint’s liaison, the Commission members recommended reverse alternative #12, which presents Washington as a complete figure, in order to avoid the perception of duplicating his portrait on the obverse. They also suggested adding more dramatic ice floes to the depiction of the river.
As always, the staff is available to assist you with future submissions.
Sincerely,
/s/Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
