Letter
Dear Ms. Mendelson-Ielmini:
In its public meeting of 17 October conducted by videoconference, the Commission of Fine Arts approved, based on its prior review of the submission materials, a concept design for site improvements at the National Mall carousel, located on the north side of Jefferson Drive near the Smithsonian Castle. In its approval action, the Commission recommended that a natural material, such as thermally treated ash, be used for the surrounding horizontal and vertical boardwalk surfaces of the carousel in lieu of the proposed composite wood decking, in order to be more compatible with the character of the National Mall.
Please consult with the staff for the refinement of the design and the preparation of a permit submission. As always, the staff is available to assist you.
Sincerely,
/s/Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
