Letter

Dear Mr. Hollis:

In its meeting of 17 September, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed alternative reverse designs for the four non-circulating one-dollar coins of the American Innovation series to be issued in 2028. The Commission was pleased to consider the preferences of the governor’s office of each state and the families of the individuals represented, and provided the following comments and recommendations.

Colorado. For the theme of the Pueblo chile, the Commission members recommended reverse #1, consistent with the preferences of the governor’s office; they described this alternative as appropriately depicting the state’s mountainous geography.

Nebraska. For the theme of center-pivot irrigation, the Commission members recommended reverse #2, noting that this alternative illustrates the irrigation system in use, with both soybeans and corn shown in the composition; reverse #2 is also the preferred alternative of the governor’s office.

North Dakota. Consistent with the preferences of the governor’s office, the Commission members recommended reverse #3a for the theme of unmanned aircraft systems, citing the artistic quality of the design.

South Dakota. For the theme of the Dupree family and its efforts to save the American bison from extinction, the Commission members recommended reverse #4, consistent with the preferences of the governor’s office and members of the Dupree family.

As always, the staff is available to assist you with future submissions.

Sincerely,
/s/Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
