Letter
Dear Mr. D'Amico:
The Commission reviewed the revised concept plans for additional security modifications to the vehicular and pedestrian entrance gates to the main section of the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. The two gates reviewed were those at 16th Street and Elder Street. The concept designs for both gates, with their associated facilities and landscaping, were approved as presented. The members found the revisions to the retaining wall at the 16th Street Gate facility, which reduced the length and height, to be an improvement. It is unfortunate that the amount of hardscape at the 16th Street gate cannot be further reduced, but the Commission recognizes that all has been done to compress the site to its functional minimum. As the final plans for the two visitor screening buildings are developed, the members encourage the design team to continue to refine the detailing on these structures. The small entrance canopies are one item the members thought could use additional attention.
When the final design and construction drawings are ready, please submit them for review. As always, the staff is available should you require guidance.
Sincerely,
/s/Frederick J. Lindstrom
