Letter
Dear Ms. Mendelson-Ielmiri:
During the Commission’s 17 March 2005 meeting, the members reviewed the proposal to place the future Victims of Communism Memorial in NPS Reservation #77B, a small triangular park on the south side of the intersection of Massachusetts and New Jersey avenues, NW. The Commission unanimously approved Reservation #77B as the designated location for this important memorial.
This site was felt to be appropriate for such a memorial as its location will allow for a visual connection along New Jersey Avenue to the statue of "Freedom" atop the Capitol dome. The site’s adjacency to the Georgetown School of Law, and its proximity to the emerging "North-of-Massachusetts" neighborhood, the National Guard Museum and the American Legion Freedom Bell were all thought to be additional positive attributes of the site.
The Commission looks forward to the next submission for the concept design of the memorial and the landscaping for the triangular park. As always, the staff is available should you require guidance.
Sincerely,
/s/Frederick J. Lindstrom
