Letter
Dear Mr. Weaver:
In its meeting of 17 September, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed a concept proposal for the new Marvin Gaye Recreation Center, to be located at 6201 Banks Place, NE. The Commission approved the general concept, requesting a revised concept submission with a physical model and additional drawings to clarify the project design.
Acknowledging the complex technical constraints of the site, the Commission members commended the design for its theatrical expression, its inventive, playful character, and its relationship to site features defining its environment, including topography and the flood-prone woodland setting. They commented that the perforated metal panels of the facade should give the impression on the interior that the building floats above the ground, reinforcing an experience of continuity with the outdoors.
The Commission looks forward to the next review of this project. As always, the staff is available to assist you.
Sincerely,
/s/Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
