Dear Mr. Smith:

In its meeting of 18 June, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed a concept design for the construction of a new single-story building at 220 Boundary Channel Drive in Arlington, Virginia, to house the Pentagon Force Protection Agency’s Counter Assault Team. The Commission did not approve the submission, providing the following comments for the development of the design.

In their discussion, the Commission members found the design of this proposed structure to be incompatible with the architecture of the nearby Pentagon and its broader setting. Citing the recent Presidential Executive Order, “Making Federal Architecture Beautiful Again,” they recommended redesigning the project to more closely align with the midcentury Stripped Classical style of the Pentagon. While they found the proposed 3-D printing construction method interesting and they acknowledged the need to accommodate this important mission located at the Pentagon, they recommended that this proposal be redesigned to better address the President’s directive.

The Commission looks forward to reviewing a new concept design for this project. Please coordinate the next submission with the staff which, as always, is available to assist you.

Sincerely,
/s/Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
