Letter
Dear Mr. Hunter:
In its meeting of 18 June, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed a concept design submission for renovations of and additions to the existing building and landscape at Seaton Elementary School, located at 1503 10th Street, NW. The Commission approved the submission, providing the following comments for the development of the design.
The Commission members expressed strong support for the design, commending the proposal as being a sensitive addition to this architecturally and culturally rich neighborhood. In their support of the project, which would reclad the existing structure and provide new program areas for the school community, they suggested further study of the new entrance to give it additional prominence, such as by adding a window to the blank field of brick above the canopy. They also noted that the cafeteria windows at the courtyard should be the appropriate height to allow students seated at the tables to have open views to the renovated outdoor spaces.
The Commission looks forward to further review of this project. Please continue to consult with the staff which, as always, is available to assist you.
Sincerely,
/s/Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
