Dear Ms. Cooper:
In its meeting of 18 February, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed the final design for the Francis A. Gregory Neighborhood Library at 3660 Alabama Avenue, SE. The Commission approved the proposal and reiterated its strong support for the D.C. Public Library's comprehensive library replacement and revitalization program.
The Commission members commented favorably on the revisions, noting that the resolution of details will be critical in realizing the overall design, which they supported enthusiastically. In their discussion, the Commission members suggested that the entry walk to the front terrace be supplemented with a second walk, commenting that the offset between the proposed walk and the front entrance may create a shortcut path through the garden. They also suggested engaging the cantilevered sunshade canopy with the roof of the secondary upper building volume in order to simplify the construction and to facilitate maintenance.
