Letter
Dear Mr. McBride:
In its meeting of 18 February, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed and approved three concept design submissions from the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) for public art installations at three Metro stations.
Farragut North Station
For the revised concept design of artist Jefre Manuel's proposed installation at the south entrance of Farragut North station, the Commission members noted the improved technical details for the installation and commented that these changes will facilitate maintenance.
Farragut West Station
For the series of wall-mounted back-lit pierced-metal convex disks by artist Michael Sirvet at the east entrance of Farragut West station, the Commission members commented favorably on the visual effect of filtered light and said that this installation would help to make the station entrance more inviting to Metro patrons.
Takoma Station
For the abstract tile mural by artist Sam Gilliam at the underpass facing the south entrance of Takoma station, the Commission members expressed enthusiasm about the proposal and commended WMATA for engaging an artist of such high quality.
The Commission delegated the review and approval of the final installation details of the three projects to the staff. As always, the staff is available to assist you with the final submission for these projects and with future proposals.
Sincerely,
/s/Thomas E. Luebke, AIA
