Dear Mr. Mugno:
In its meeting of 18 January, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed design alternatives for a Medal of Honor memorial medallion submitted by the Institute of Heraldry on behalf of the Department of Veterans Affairs.
The Commission members recommended Option 5, citing its strong association with the historic 1861 Medal of Honor design, using a star-shaped planchet with trefoil points, framed by paired leaves and scrolls. They expressed appreciation for the presentation, which provided context for this medallion and the work of the Institute of Heraldry; they also commented favorably on the pierced treatment of other medal and medallion designs that were included in the presentation.
