Letter
Dear Mr. Peterson:
In its meeting of 18 July, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed alternative obverse designs for the National Baseball Hall of Fame commemorative coin program, the result of a recent public design competition, to be struck with the reverse design that was reviewed in March 2013.
The Commission recommended alternative #1 with the request to refine the lettering and omit the foliage pattern at the edges of the baseball glove–presented as either wheat stalks or laurel leaves–as a confusing design element alongside the glove's stitching. Noting the unusual concave form of the coins in this program, the Commission members expressed appreciation for the three–dimensional modeling that was provided in conjunction with alternative #7; they commented that this depiction confirmed the appropriateness of the glove as a strong image for the concave obverse, while preferring the depiction of the glove in alternative #1.
As always, the staff is available to assist you with future submissions.
Sincerely,
/s/Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
