Letter
Dear Mr. Moy:
In its meeting of 18 November, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed alternative reverse designs for the American Eagle platinum coin to be issued in 2011, part of the ongoing series of reverses based on the themes of the preamble to the United States Constitution.
Reiterating their longstanding concern with the excessive complexity of many presented alternatives, the Commission members recommended alternative #5 due to the simplicity and legibility of this design. They commented that the wreath motif is an appropriate compositional element within the circular shape of the coin and suggested that the three hands holding the wreath be further simplified by eliminating the depiction of jewelry and clothing.
As always, the staff is available to assist you with future submissions.
Sincerely,
/s/Thomas E. Luebke, AIA
