Dear Mr. Hollis:
In its public meeting of 19 February conducted by videoconference, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed a set of alternative designs for the 2027 reverse of the Paralympic Sports Half Dollar, a program that will depict sports tailored to athletes with a range of disabilities, including physical, vision, and intellectual impairments. For the 2027 issue of the coin, which features wheelchair basketball, the Commission provided the following recommendations and comments.
The Commission members expressed support for reverse #7, noting its superior legibility and dynamic image. They commented on the balanced composition of the two figures and the playful placement of the basketball in the text. However, they recommended removing the border and the text “Wheelchair Basketball” to avoid clipping the images, relocating the date “2027” to the lower left edge of the coin, and completing the depiction of the wheels.
