Letter

Dear Mr. Hollis:

In its public meeting of 19 February conducted by videoconference, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed design alternatives for the reverses of the 2027 Youth American Sports Quarter circulating coins, which will depict several sports commonly played by American youth. The Commission provided the following comments and recommendations.

Baseball. The Commission members recommended reverse #1 for its affinity with traditional American illustration and its asymmetrical composition. They requested adjusting the position of the catcher’s mask to be correctly depicted as face protection.

Golf. The Commission members recommended reverse #4, citing the composition of three figures and the clever placement of the golf ball and flag as part of the “Golf” text. To avoid crowding the figures, they recommended reducing the size of the letters “G” and “f” and the date “2027,” which they said should be moved away from the figures and the text.

Soccer. The Commission members recommended reverse #1 for its expressive composition depicting the raw emotion of a winning moment; they suggested slightly reducing the size of the word “Soccer” to create more space between the inscriptions and the figure, and adding the number 47 on the figure’s jersey in honor of the president.

Softball. The Commission members recommended reverse #4 for its active composition and general similarity to the recommended alternative for the baseball coin; they advised removing the home plate from the coin.

Snowboarding. The Commission members recommended reverse #3 for its classic coin design, featuring an active figure within a landscape setting appropriate for this winter sport.

As always, the staff is available to assist you with future submissions.

Sincerely,
